most would say a hard tri fold is more durable,I have one on my ridgeline, but went with the hard roll up this time as its more convienant and seems to sit more flush from what I seen in the pics

I always heard the hard rollups were equally strong (or sometimes stronger), but I guess it would just depend on specific models to see what they are rated for weight wise.

I have a hard trifold right now, and downsides to rollup is that they are heavier to try and rollback from the side, especially if you're not very tall, since you're lifting a whole third of a panel at once, and when fully retracted they completely block your rear view.

Advantage is that you can partially open the tonneau, and when they are fully open they occupy virtually no space in the bed.

Hard rollup occupy a little bit of space from the roll itself, but usually let you see out the top part of the glass behind you still.

Only thing I know for sure is I am not a fan of the soft ones I've seen, especially for the Maverick they seem to really stick up which I find aesthetically displeasing compared to a flush fit.

I'm attracted to both the hard and soft tri-fold tonneaus - haven't decided which yet. My reason why is because most models can be completely detached and stowed after being folded, which eliminates the blockage on the rear window. I don't believe soft or hard roll-ups can do that (I could be wrong though).

I saw someone post that they were going for hard tri-fold because they worked in a sketchy neighborhood and were afraid that someone might slash the other types. I don't have that problem, but I see it as a valid concern.

Dealer called me, said the hard tri fold would delay things.
Had it removed, I hope! Went with it, as I liked the look.
Didn't care for a soft cover, as I have something similar
on my Ranger now. And do NOT like the looks of the roll up!

As for daytime security, I'm in view of my truck all day.
Well, until I take my afternoon nap, during dialysis!
But, right out the window, so anyone inside can see it.
Parked in garage at night.

One drawback of the rollup is if you live in an area that receives a lot of ice and snow they tend to freeze up.

I'm just wary about the quality of the vinyl. I think the tri-fold is more durable since it's either fiberglass or aluminum.

I did initially have the tri-fold option with my build but I changed it to hard roll-up since you're able to see out the back window. I also ordered a sliding manual rear window.. so I don't want anything covering that... But yeah...

I feel like I shoulda just stuck with the tri-fold for the durability but I rather be safe being able to have more visibility

Not really - profile, weight limit, quality, longevity all depend on the make. I went with Extang Exceed as it's way cheaper than factory (which is made by somebody else like BAK anyway, you're just paying for the mark-up), didn't hold the factory build up (happening now), sits totally flush, use with an Elevate ladder rack, has way less parts to screw up (roll up hook and loop are particularly bad), 2/3 open doesn't block any view, will last longer than any roll up. Soft tonneaus just do not last, they get trashed in no time at all, so figure you'll go through at least a few of them in the lifetime of a good hard trifold.

I was told that it was 400lbs
My understanding is that it can support 400 Lbs. if the weight is distributed on the truck rails. Or 200 Lbs. directly on top of it.

I prefer the hard cover roll up for security reasons, especially when my truck is not parked in our garage.

However, I will likely purchase a hard rectractable cover for my Maverick. This will eliminate losing any rear window visibility.
