I just got home from meeting with Ford engineers at what they called a customer clinic. It started with one of those Ford Customer Survey emails. It lead to an invite to this event.
First thing they do is have you sign this waiver. Good thing though as it means test drives. It means being able to bypass the dealer and replicate the issues right in front of the person that can actually do something about the design.
Next up was meeting with various engineering teams. They start with asking about stuff from the survey and then branch off to things that might be new or about potential new features.
Electrical
Asked about:
-the android auto connectivity issue
-if all 4 windows being one touch up/down would be appealing
-how satisfied I was with the auto high beams (I mentioned that they struggle with dusk and twilight. Lots of on/off and don't want to accidentally signal gangs)
-if auto wipers were appealing (I said no)
When asked about other wish list items:
I mentioned a 1200w inverter and a cell signal booster for a potential overland package.
Also mentioned that the next gen sync would eliminate the cubby.
Exterior
Asked about:
-windshield rattle (determined it wasn't external)
-water leak from the rear driver door (was able to recreate and found that the door was inset significantly relative to the body compared to the others)
Wishlist items:
I mentioned would be tie downs above the wheel wells as a value option compared to the rails.
Interior
Asked about:
-Interior comfort
-Windshield rattle
-Interior noises (I mentioned that they might want to add some dynamat to the rear by the subwoofer for the B&O option)
Wishlist items:
-there were memory position seats, cooled seats, proper height adjustment.
Powertrain
Asked about:
- Powertrain satisfaction
- If I would want an engine cover (I said yes for sound deadening reasons)
-How much would I expect to pay for an engine cover ($50)
I did mention that I have some mild power surging in the 1600-2000 rpm range. He said that the computer doesn't finish its learning process until 3000-5000 miles.
Vehicle Engineering
Asked about:
-windshield rattle (went on a test drive with me about that)
-general satisfaction
-towing (I mentioned how the 4K cuts it close for towing something like a 21ft bunkhouse, but the Santa Cruz could do it)
-If I cross shopped
-Ford accessories (I mentioned about how the hard roll-up and bed extender don't play nice together and how the mudflaps leave a gap on the rear driver's side)
-If I used my under-seat storage (I said yes, but car seats for my children limit that. A split fold would help a lot in that regard.)
I also suggested a pass through for the rear bench to allow safter lumber transport. Might work if other C2 vehicles have this already.
They also agreed to a picture.
It was difficult to demonstrate the rattle in the parking lot due to the loud overpass.
They are fairly certain though the windshield rattle is the tab that needs to be bent back. The locator pin issue.
I did not have time for the marketing team. The vehicle Engineering team test drive went until the gates were closing.
It was good to be able to provide the voice of the customer. If you get one of these events in your area, I highly recommend them.
I also got a $200 check, a water bottle, FITS accessories, and ablanket picnic mat?
