I’m up in cold NE, been in the 20s-high 30s. Running mid-grade 89 octane, driving 60/40 highway/city getting 23-24mpg and some change average per tank last couple weeks. Thinking about stepping down to regular 87 octane if it doesn’t harm mpgs or make the engine knock.

MPG should be roughly similar with 87 or 93, you’ll just lose ~20hp running 87.

Whatever you do, I would try to pick one octane and stay with it if possible. Constantly switching octanes confuses the ECU and you’ll get more preignition or detonation than you normally would after switching to a lower octane. If you do switch down to 87 I would try to drive on the conservative side for 50-100 miles if possible so the ECU has time to adjust the tuning.

That being said, these are still basically the Focus ST motors so running 91+ probably isn’t a bad idea.

Best mileage I have seen was 37mpg running non-ethanol 91 octane summer gas on two lane highway trip for about 150 miles. On winter gas 10% ethanol 87 octane I’m seeing about 32 under the same conditions. This is all in eco-mode with a verrry light foot on the pedal.

Whoah!! I gotta step down to 87. 89 and up cost a pretty penny more than 87 around here. I wish the modes would stay between shutting off and turning on the truck. I did find around town yesterday I was getting better mpgs in regular drive mode than I usually do in eco mode. For me I think in efo mode I’m into the throttle more to compensate for the less responsiveness.

89, if I ever get a tune I will switch to 91/93.

Little over 2,000 miles averaging around 27. roughly 1/3 interstate, highway and rough country roads or no roads. 87 octane, ill be VERY disappointed if I have to run any higher. No ping, no useable performance drop.

3000 km on eco boost, running 87 octane have not been under 30mpg yet.

ECU gets confused? I didn't know this was possible.

Confused is maybe not the right word but the ECU will optimize the timing and ignition for the octane that’s being used and so if you have been using 93 and switch to 87, there will be some preignition and detonation before the ECU retards the timing.

Not really the end of the world, but if you plan on owning the car 100k+ miles and are constantly switching octanes, the motor will experience more wear.

Wow you guys using 87 are getting more mpgs than me at 89. Im switching to 87 stat and sticking with it. No sense spending 40-50¢ a gallon for 89. I don’t have the towing package and won’t be hauling more than some junk to the dump every now and then.

Same here? That's amazing. I owned close to 40 different vehicles, and never got over window sticker for mpg???

You are right. Eco mode is only worth it if you are very light on the pedal, or on a long highway stretch in cruse control. You can override the eco mode being heavy on the throttle. If you are heavy on the pedal it will make for a terrible driving experience because you have terrible throttle response but you will get terrible MPG because you are giving it a lot of throttle.
