The hybrid actually costs more to produce than the EcoBoost.
Ford priced the EcoBoost as an "upgrade" so that customers would get sucked in and "step up" to it, thinking that they are getting something better.
Ford expected customers to fall for this and for 60% of the orders to be for higher profit margin EcoBoost, thus lining Ford's pockets.
When 60% of customers opted for the hybrid, Ford delayed hybrid production to get them to switch to the more profitable EcoBoost.
