Had my Maverick almost 2 weeks and loving it! I have been putting in what I thought was mid gas. Well recently came to my attention that Colorados mid 87 is the rest of the countries regular as most other states don't offer 85 as the lowest octane. With that being said should I actually be doing premium 91, is there any harm in sometimes doing mid 87 and sometimes premium 91? If I have to cough up the coin and pay premium prices I will but wondering how necessary that is.

My understanding is that the Maverick requires 87 octane for regular use but if you are hauling something 91 octane. I refuse to put 85 in any of our vehicles and typically use non-ethanol for every fill up unless it is not available.

Yeah I refuse to touch the 85 especially since very few other states even offer this as an option. I guess my biggest question is 87 okay or is it in my best interest for 91 since anywhere else 91 is only mid not premium. Or even a combo of the two when pay check week I do 91 and non paycheck week do 87 or would mixing it up cause damage and should stick to exclusively 91? I'll pay to only do 91 but only if that does have a genuine impact. Annoying that Colorados gas is different from most of the country.

FYI....ethanol free gas link.
Alot of the Maverik gas stations offer pure gas, but I use only use pure gas in small gas engines like lawn mowers.

I guess I need a little clarification forgive me for my ignorance. So there's octane levels 85 87 91 but I should also be aware of ethanol in gas? Is that a separate gas option at the pump or just something that some gas stations are ethanol free gas regardless of tier you use.
Prior to my maverick I never had a car that I really cared about properly maintaining (or the funds to do so) so learning all this now.

85 octane at altitude performs the same as 87 at sea level ;)
Good to know I'll be taking a road trip to Vegas next month (mavs first trip I'm so excited) so I'll be sure to fill up with 91 before I hit the road since will be driving into lower elevation.

In my aerea we have varying octanes from 85, 87, 89, 91, 93. If you haul anything I beleive Ford recommends 91 Octane for that particular situation otherwise 87 is fine. As far as Ethanol and No Ethanol you have to look at stations that carry no ethanol some have a separate pump while others have pumps with handles that define ethanol to no ethanol. No Ethanol is typical higher priced and in my are comes in 87 and 91 Octane. Ifg at all possible use no ethanol wherever possible and if you can't I suggest using an additive that cleans out the gunk from ethanol on a set schedule based upon fill ups. Your engine should have less issues with no ethanol and get you better gas mileage which will help offset the higher price.

I am no expert, just offering more options to spoil the soup.
I use the lowest tier price gas on my vehicles.
I am not afraid to use ethanol on modern vehicles. Ethanol was mentioned so this is my 2 cents.

I would use e15 in your circumstance (towing). My experience with it has been very positive over the last 15 years and it’s a LOT cheaper.

85 octane at elevation is perfectly fine for light duty use (same as rug87 at sea level) as the air is thinner making octane requirements much lower.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter as much as you think , if your vehicle requires “premium “ that isn’t a fixed octane value as it changes with elevation, but as stated, e15 has been far and away my best discovery, engine runs cooler, knock count is way down, it honestly performs like premium but costs over a dollar a gallon less

Thanks for clarification. I think I'll do a little mix of 87 and 91 when driving in Colorado and not towing. Then if I tow or leave Colorados high elevation do 91 and ethanol free when available. I didn't know an additve was an option to help keep it clean I'll look into this more thank you! I've never known much about cars and really been enjoying learning more about keeping my truck in tip top shape. This forum and others like it have been such a wonderful support really appreciate this community!

E15 I can't say I have ever heard of that I'm sure I've seen it just didn't know what it was. I'll have to do some looking into this. I appreciate the advice especially advice that'll save me gas money!

a local station sells 87 at same price as 85. I have 9100 miles on 87 except for two tanks of 91 and saw zero noticeable difference so back to 87. If I tow I might try 91 again or if it starts to ping.

Do not use the 85 in a turbocharged engine. 85 is only used at elevations because the air is thinner & you have less lower effective compression ratio from a N/A engine. A turbocharged engine maintains this compression, so 85 is not suitable. 87 or anything above is fine. If E-15 is 5% cheaper that E-10 you will break even, which currently here would be 20 cents, around here E-15 is only a dime less than E-10, so you can get a fuel with less mpg for more money, why use it?

in my area
e15 is $3.669
E10 is $3.959
Premium is close to $5

If I happen to visit 12 miles north of here
E15 is only $3.499 there

Well worth it and on my vehicles that “require “ premium e15 seems to perform very well in terms of knock count, also can’t detect any difference in summer fuel economy e15 vrs e10RUG

I guess you figure my MPGs are bad? From experience I don’t get more on e10.

Ford Maverick Colorado or any of the other states with 85 gas as regular 87 mid and 91 top what gas are you using? 9E9FE619-3836-4369-B5F1-9A35D7E5BAE4
