I have been thinking about making my own tailgate extender. Mine would be made out of aluminum plate with ss hinges. It would fold flat on the tailgate. Attached to the top of the tailgate would be a panel that folds up 90 degrees, it would reveal 2 panels hinged to its sides thatfold out 90 degrees to meet the end of the bedsides. Then a hole/slot cut in the side panels that would lock onto the hinge cable pins. It would basicall box in the tailgate fully squared. Maybe something added in the corner to keep it square aswell. It would basically be fully stowed when not in use and not take up any space. Or maybe I will just be lazy and get one of these.

Does anyone with the Ford OEM extender have an opinion on it, good or bad?
Seems like a weird design by ford when most would prefer the more traditional version.

I was going to do without a bed extender because I hated the shape of the Ford design with wasted space on the corners. But, this one captures much more useable area at a great price. I will order it

If by some miracle I was ever able to put this together and put it on, I would leave it on forever. Not sure if this helpful for a kayak or canoe. What would people use it for ?

I found one recently for my 2005 Sport Trac at a salvage for $13.
It is 48" wide at the mounting clips, so it should fit the Maverick great. I will just have to tap holes for the striker bolts that it mounts to, or just put a washer/Lock nut on the other side.
