Called my dealer today 4 Nov (put in an order yesterday) and asked if we can do a buyer's order now instead of waiting until the truck gets here so I wouldn't be surprised of the price I pay. He said they couldn't because a VIN number is required. Is this true/ any way to guarantee on a set price now? Also apparently there is a $2720 TEMPTAG (I think that's what he said) for every new car purchased in Colorado? Is this correct?

I ordered mine a few weeks ago from Phil Long in Colorado Springs. I had a final price I signed for, and there were no dealer temp tag cost quoted. I'm sure I'll pay a decent amount when registering, but $2700 for a temp tag is odd. Would be curious if they sent you an invoice that you signed for, and if that was listed as an additional cost?

I also ordered from them. The only "final" price he said was the build printout we did would be the final besides taxes and fees. While he said he wouldn't do any of the markups, I wanted to get it in writing.

No an assigned VIN is not required. Others here have a signed "Buyers Order" when they first ordered.

In this video Tim says you can get a signed "Buyers Order" even if you are not yet scheduled with a build date. That means no VIN number yet.

Tim's video here states getting a "Signed Buyers Order" to protect yourself from bad dealers who are marking up custom orders when they arrive:

The part about needing a VIN to do a legal buyers contract sounds legit to me. I'm doing repeat business with my dealer down in Cortez. Bought F-150 from them couple years ago when I was new to Colorado. We did get a temporary paper license on there good for IIRC 30 days, but I don't think there was any special charge for that. What did seem odd to me having lived in CA forever was you don't pay your DMV fees at the dealer when buying your car in CO and have the 30 day paper license to get it registered and buy your plates/tags at local DMV office. I can check our old F-150 contract to look for the "temptag" line item if that is a huge deal for you and you don't get an answer soon.

how do you identify the exact item you are purchasing with no ID# (VIN)? Sounds like something is missing in translation here...

When you place your order with the dealer they place what you want into the order system. Then that order can be printed. It is call a DORA form. That is what gets submitted to Ford so that your Maverick gets built and delivered.

That DORA contains everything you are purchasing. All the dealer does is copy the prices from the DORA onto a "Buyers Order" form and fills out any additional costs and sums it up to produce the Balance Due. So they work in tandem. The DORA has the details of your order and the "Buyers Order" cements the agreed upon price you will pay.

Here are pictures of my DORA and "Buyer's Order" with the personal details cropped out.

On the DORA you can see everything on my order and the total MSRP price of $24,620.

My deal is at Invoice price so on the Buyer's order you see Vehicle Price of the same MSRP price of $24,620 but then a Savings line of -446.15. That value is Invoice price minus MSRP price.

These two documents are linked together by my name and order information. The "Buyer's Order" is signed and dated by me and the General Sales Manager.

While knowing exactly what you are buying, perhaps more, or at least equally important, is getting a bottom-line figure, and the dealer’s signature on a paper that states model, trim, and options.

Small world, I guess we'll have a couple Maverick hybrids in the Springs. I'm curious when we'll even hear about a build date, the dealer said maybe December but seems.like it won't be until Feb/Mar the if not later.

No point in trying to cancel your order. Chances are good the dealer won't cancel it anyway and just try to sell it on the lot. Probably with a $5K+ market adjustment fee.....

Anyway, it doesn't matter for you because all you need to do is build another Mav using Fords site and when it asks you to choose a dealer select the one you want.

Dang! Temp tag $2700 what is the annual charge for the "permanent" tag?
