My truck makes a weird groaning sound when I step on the brakes in reverse, seems to only do it when the vehicle is cold. Normal?

Hi there! Would you send us a private message with your VIN and dealership name and location? I’d like to look into this concern on my end.

Mine does that same thing. At times, backing up, the truck makes a "moaning" noise.

Probably humidity-related condensation & surface rust on the brake rotors, getting scraped off by the brake pads when you first move the vehicle on a cold morning.

That makes sense, except this is the Gulf Coast, it's in the 60s. It was 80 degrees last Saturday!

Do you have the brake-hold turned on? It does that.
I always leave it on, I was kinda figuring that might have something to do with it. Guess there is no problem.

Just condensation on the brake pads which usually happens first thing in the morning due to certain outside temp conditions.

Weird, I just moved my truck in the parking lot, with the auto=brake off or on, still makes the noise. It's above 60 degrees and sunny, 73* humidity. Probably nothing more than annoyance.

If you have ever driven a manual transmission vehicle, I am sure you have heard the same sound driving in reverse, a groaning sound that increases in volume and pitch the faster you travel in reverse. My best guess is that this sound in reverse is somewhat of the same factor on these newer transmissions.

No it’s only when I hit the brakes. And only when the vehicle is cold.

The same issue with my 2019 Ram. So many Ram owners complained about it, a TSB was issued to add support brackets between the rear brake torque member mounting bolts and the axle shaft. So as not to lose the vehicle for a whole day, I bought the kit and installed it myself. Not a peep from the rear brakes since. Here is a copy of that Ram TSB to show how they addressed the problem.
