Black box above rearview mirror - tether removal?

Has anyone figured out how to detach the plastic tether cord that the black box above the mirror is attached to? I can't figure out how the clip is attached - it slides back and forth but I see no way to unhook it (XLT HB).

Anyone have any idea what the purpose of this tether is?

Turn the tether 90⁰ so the flats line up. It's there to keep the cover from going flying in the event of an accident.
