Down to earth review.
I appreciate the balance in his statements; this is his car. He is not getting a free vehicle to destroy from ford. Any other reasonable owner may have done the same.

From a technical point of view I don't understand why the \ any electronic traction control can not be programmed better to emulate a low gear requirement. At the end it is about sensors, breaks and software. maybe in the future as all these mechanical components will be replaced by smarter software

Even if you're right in your assesment of his manhood and driving abilities, I still think it's a very accurate representation of what an average guy with kids in the back can expect from his Mav. No way I would have gotten much more aggressive on that mud slide with my personal vehicle either tbh.
While I completely understand your point of view of not wanting to damage your vehicle, these guys are right in saying that Ryan did everything wrong when it comes to getting over this obstacle, anybody afraid of damaging their vehicle should never take it off the pavement, whether it is getting pinstriped by branches or having to be aggressive and possibly bottoming out your rig are the norm offroad and not even considered as real damage.

When to comes to mud and snow there is no crawling, you have to use momentum and wheel spin or you are going to get super stuck.

I cant stand watching this guy. He is one of the bigest pussies out there. A nerd. He babies everything and does everything wrong. Why would you start at the obstacle and try and crawl over it instead of building up speed and momentum? Again, this guy is a tool.
Honesty, I kept wanting him to get a running start but I can't really fault him. One issue is if you slide off the road the drop off was pretty serious - he would be wrecked or at least stuck.

I completely agree. That's why I commented here that a 10 year old tacoma or jeep is the way to go. Taking a new, factory aligned, fully functional road machine off - road will lead to pretty quick deterioration of the machine.

I wonder if the 2 wheel drive FWD would have done as well on that road. - No real snow and mostly level. Good set of tires and give it a try.
No way in Hell would a FWD Maverick traverse past a few of those obstacles. When the trucks suspension starts to articulate, you need power to all wheels.

No, not even close. What would make you think it would?

I wanted to see him try a little harder too. Maybe air down a bit, try other lines and definitely not be so quick to lift the throttle.

That said:
1) His nice, new rig. His choice
2) It was a slickish, off camber section with nothing to arrest a bad lateral skid. You saw how quickly the rig sidestepped even the way he was babying it.

The Maverick, even with a decal and skid plates, is not designed for conditions like that. To build it for conditions 99+% of them will never see would increase weight, price and fuel burn.

It would be an interesting exercise. FWD with an empty bed, it might surprise some.

I agree; I don't blame him for not pushing it. Losing a $30K vehicle to sliding off a trail like that would not be pretty.

I'm debating whether to get dedicated snow tires for my Maverick.. I never had to for my Subaru (we get a lot of snow around here, but most of the roads are plowed well); my first vehicle was a pickup with part-time 4WD and it was horrible in snow.

Two years ago I put new Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady (All Seasons but snow-rated) tires on my Subbie and they were great.

Biiiiiig puss energy. Imagine not getting a running start to get up that small hill and just quitting instead ... all at "7/8s" trip completion. I may have yelled at my TV:

Yeah but he is providing a service(off road review) that goal is not accomplished by babying the truck, that was a doable obstacle only seemed to require a little bit of "effort".

Why would someone willingly use an old vehicle and be uncomfortable while having fun(or trying anyways), is beyond me, that is like if someone told me to use an old phone or watch an old tv, to me that just sounds like masochisism but to each their own.

For the majority of the trail, I'd be fairly comfortable using my 2wd 02 Silverado. But that landslide section? I'd turn around even in my old 02 Explorer awd. I get that you can just armchair QB it and say full send, but that's a very expensive oops that there's not really a Plan B for. But, for my intended use of the Mav, it's looking quite capable.

And seeing him use his turn signal in the middle of BFE forest roads tells me a lot about the guy....lol

A real world application for the Maverick AWD.
Even though as some have pointed out correctly that if you dont want to ding your ride off roading means that you should really stick to asphalt. No true off-roader puts a new truck in that environment especially in stock configuration and not expect it to chip paint or bottom out at a minimum or even roll their ride. They are mentally ready to sacrifice their ride for the experience. Its always a used truck or jeep modded out to the kilts.
Even though I felt like it was more of a tire commercial then a Mav review he did understand the vehicle limitations and did put it thru its paces.
As tiers are very important in having a safe off-roading experience no matter what vehicle we are using.
Just when we walk or run or hike the right shoes can make all the difference.
Even for a chubby goon like me to a spry athlete.

Physics is the un biased equalizer.

Overly careful at the end , shoulda done an “don’t try this at home “ disclaimer and just bolted through it. I’ve had many pucker moments off-road when it solved that problem, a few scrapes but real world, heck a few different options for traction assist would have worked. He couldn’t admit he can do the same trail as his 4 runner… he even thought his 4 runner would issues..

Started out as a good review…
