I did my breakin oil change at 4258 miles, with mobil 1 advanced full synthetic. But I did not reset the oil life at that time. Just curious when it's time to change the oil according to onbaord computer.
Yesterday I changed oil again at 9782 miles. This is my second oil change on this maverick awd 2.0. I still used mobil 1 advanced full synthetic. Was thinking about Pennzoil but since I already used mobil1 in my first oil change, I need to have some consistency.
Still hated that 15 screws. It's a pain to align all the screw holes after you did the oil change.
For oil filter I used Mobil 1 M1-102A. The filter is rated for 20k miles between the change.
I'm driving about 3k miles per month.
I calculate my next oil change will happen a little over 3 months from now. I don't plan to let ECU to remind me for an oil change. This time, at 9782 miles, the ECU is saying there's only 24% oil life remain. Since I already did an oil change without resetting the oil life, 24% isn't as bad as it sounds. I will do my next oil change at about 18k~19k, approximately 9k miles from now. By then the oil life will probably be around 30%.
Since it'll be early Jan when I do the next oil change, I think I'll do it a different way. Instead of jacking up the car in snow and crawl under it in bitter cold wind, I will just suck out the oil from the dipstick. I do have an oil pump which I haven't really used.
That way I don't have to remove that 15 screws again. It'll be a pain in the butt if your fingers are frozen.
But with the pumping method I won't be able to change the filter, which is probably fine. Since the filter is rated 20k miles. The next oil change will happen early Apr of 2024 which I will go jack up the truck, crawl under there, remove that 15 screws, drain oil and change filter.

Plan to do this in this alternate method. Once pumping, next time regular oil and filter change, then pumping again.
I will only be removing those hated screws once every 7 months.

I think I'll probably go with a Fumoto valve. I'm too old to be messing with that damn plate every oil change, and I don't want an inexperienced tech doing it either!

I figure even if I end up taking it in for oil changes (which I likely will), as long as I make the service tech aware of the valve mod (and that there's no need to drop the plate), there will be less opportunity for misthreaded bolts, etc. in the future.

My hats off to you 👍😀. When I got my my Hybrid Maverick I put about 1400 miles on it got that crappy little filter and oil out to get any metal shaving dirt and crap out of the engine ☠☠. Went on a 5000mile trip from TN to NV. Changed again . Just at 14000 mile now and changes it again. Always use 100% Syn Oil with a 15000. To 20000 mile Syn Oil filter . Some will say that over doing it but to me Good oil and filter , keeping the Engine cool no bug or dirt on the radiator or engine is the life blood of the Engine 😀👍👻. Unless it's one of the hybrids that goes boom and burns up ⁉☠🔥😱

The amount of effort, bullshit, hassle and thought someone will put into saving $75 is mind boggling to me. My time and sanity for not having to do this in freezing cold, or do something that might jeopardize my warranty is not even close to being worth it.

I went to have oil change a toyota for a car. I came in to dealer and left 3 hrs later.
It always takes me about 30 minutes from start to finish and put everthing away.
I believe i will cut out a circle on the shield under the drain plug and filter. and then re attach
after work done with a zip tie.

It is also fun to do the work myself. Still waiting for the hybrid.

I agree but...

Do you really get freezing cold temps in Phoenix? We were 32° here last night. Back to firewood splitting!

No, not very often. But it is bad or worse when it is 118 out and the pavement temps are 165. The area you live in is beautiful I am sure. But for year round living I won't tolerate cold climates anymore. The OP is also talking about now sucking the oil out and not changing the filter, etc. Its just WAY too much hassle for the expense that even an "expensive" oil change would be on a Maverick.

I do mine about every other change not because I want to deal with it, but because I want to keep an eye on any other issues...leaks, tears, etc. I don't trust Ford to do that and I don't visit quick lube places. I don't even want to imagine how they deal with skid plates and bolts like on my FX4...

I know there are PLENTY of stories of things going wrong at both dealers and quick service places. That said 100's of thousands of cars are serviced every day all across the country without incident. I just can't wrap my head around being that concerned. Though I see it often with clients. Recently I was in a time pinch and had my service done at a Valvoline quick lube. Full syn oil change and tire rotation on my FX4 and all without a single catastrophe

The only thing you have to worry about now is that they don't lose the clip.

As a 2.0EB AWD owner that changes my own oil, I get where you're coming from. We like to do it ourselves more because we enjoy it, and don't trust strangers (IMO). I've had some bad experiences at dealerships and mechanics (no filter change, leaking drain plug, loose lug nuts after rotation). Any money saved is icing on the cake.

I've got the tools, and I enjoy doing it. Early Sunday morning with the radio on, takes me about 30 minutes now.

Well, if you DIY, you know what you are pouring into the engine. I kinda not trusting they put good qualify full synthetic oil at the oil change place, or dealership. There was once that a quicklube place didn't change my filter(it was another vehicle, years ago).
With a new car the filter doesn't need to be changed every time. Use a good quality filter like mobil 1, you can change it every other time.

also it takes less time to do it myself. My local dealership has long lines. I would imagine at least 2 hours for an oil change and tire rotation. Yes they have free coffee but ....

You can never change it if you want. But if you have an oiling related failure, and the manufacturer says to change it at specified intervals and you didn't they can and will deny your claim. Why bother saving a $20 filter for a potential $8k engine? And the amount of people with unrealistic worries is genuinely staggering. 80% of the things the average person worries about never happen. People cause themselves so much extra time, effort and headache being concerned about something that will likely never happen.
