Pretty sure 99% of that would be due to the tune and not the physical mods. It probably won't be very reliable running that way though, just my guess. There's a reason why they are tuned the way they are from factory.

The owner is on here. In the comments in the article, he shows a spreadsheet of his mileage over the last 6 or 8 fillups. I don't know where The Drive got the 39mpg, unless he stated he got that on a very specific trip.... We all know a 2.0T isn't getting that unless you are going 35mph for the entire tank....

Of course it's possible......just not at the same time. That's the Jekyll/Hyde nature of the EB engines. They are very efficient when babied, and nasty with a tune.

I had a 93 octane tuned 2.7 F150 that would cut a 4.6 0-60, and knock down 28 mpg at a 55mph highway drive.

I think there are some shenanigans afoot. But I'd also concede that if you really baby the thing around that 39MPG is within the realm of possibility on some routes, particularly when measured 'one way' instead of 'round-trip'

The article says "regularly gets 30 mpg". That seems fair given it's rated at 22/29, especially if he drives like a grandma which he very strongly hints at. Most people can exceed the estimated fuel rating on their car with intelligent driving practices and minimizing brake usage.

He's claiming its from driving it easy basically like using some hypermiling techniques. I sincerely doubt his numbers though.

Also, basing an entire article on somebody's facebook posts is just dumb. They should go and drive the truck themselves.

I could maybe believe the 0-60 in 5.5 secs, but 39 mpg? No frickin way unless he was driving down hill the whole way. That or his average mpg gauge was malfunctioning.
If you look at the image in the article, it shows 398 miles travelled over 7 hours of driving. An average speed of 57mph. If this was over flat terrain and no wind (or possibly needing some help from the wind), it is absolutely doable. That average speed is 100% in an engine's sweet spot - top gear, low RPM.

They also said they drive the speed limit and don't drive crazy, which leads me to believe they are very intentionally working to achieve that excellent mpg.

Would this be the result for most people in their real driving experience? Nope. Is it achievable? Yes.

It was one specific trip. Headline of article a bit misleading.

I don't know about 39 MPG but 30 to 35 MPG for combined city/hwy should be doable. Case and point since I've broken in the engine and changed the oil when I run my 2.0L ecoboost with the 4k tow package in ecoboost mode for a whole tank of 87 octane gas, I've been getting around 29 MPG combined and that includes driving mountain roads with some fairly steep grades and with the bed loaded up to about 800 or so pounds on some of those drives.

I hope when I get my trucks it's as good as that. Did not get the hybrid because I have a boat and wanted awd. I don't expect 39 MPG but was hoping for better than 20 as some have posted here.
