I think you’re mis-remembering. My dad had a 73 mustang with a 2 barrel 351C. It made something like 180 hp at 4,000 rpm and was mated to a 3 speed slush box. When I was very young, he thought it was just the coolest and most bad assed car around, but by the time I was a teen in the late 80’s I realized that his 73 Mustang was pretty lame and tame.

Now if you’re talking about a 60’s muscle car with an aftermarket carb, Intake, cam and exhaust, well sure. That does sound much better. But new mustangs sound better with those mods too.

Agreed! Had a girl a while ago that supposedly had a, for lack of a better word’crush’ but I didn’t care. She bought a ‘Stang’ and drove around my workplace constantly and it sounded wow, awesome. Wish my 350 Z-28 sounded that good. Mustangs have a different sound, and I love it.

Just curious -- would there be any point in doing this mod to a 2024 Maverick XLT Hybrid ?

Yes. The point is to make it sound cool, sporty, desirable, a chick magnet. Whatever adjective you want to use. But at the end of the day, it’s still a flat-plane crank inline 4 that only spins to 6,500 rpm. So the desirability of that sound is an acquired taste. I personally don’t like the sound, and I wouldn’t make this modification. Sounds like every other Honda and Toyota. The JDM fan-boys seem to love that sound though. To me, flat plane 4’s don’t start to sound good until 8000+ rpm. On the flip side, I’ve put aftermarket exhausts(sometimes just a simple muffler mod like this one) on every 6 and 8 cylinder ice vehicle I’ve owned.

A muffler or exhaust was not even on my list of things to do to my Maverick but when I recently had it in for an oil change, I was somewhat surprised at the look of the muffler when it was on the lift. The tailpipe looks great, but the giant muffler looked a bit worse for wear in terms of appearance. My list has changed.

Well you wouldn't want really, really, really short people looking at a less than pristine muffler. That would not do, . Just joking with you. I just want to get mine on a lift to see the muffler withou laying in the gravel to do it.

Title: 🔥 Just Swapped FoMoCo Muffler for MagnaFlow 12255 — UNBELIEVABLE Difference!

Yesterday I replaced the OEM FoMoCo muffler on my 2025 Maverick XLT 2.0L EcoBoost (MPC engine) with a MagnaFlow 12255, and I have to say — the transformation is insane.

🔊 Sound

  • At idle to ~2,000 RPM, it has a clean, smooth rumble — not loud, just present and refined.
  • After that, the sound almost disappears inside the cabin. No drone, no rasp — just clean flow.
🚀 Performance

But here’s where it blew me away: throttle response and acceleration are night and day.
Not just in Sport Mode, but even in Normal Mode, the truck feels like an entirely different animal. It’s as if the turbo and engine have been freed, no longer fighting to breathe.

It pushes HARD — and the way it climbs through the revs now is so much smoother and quicker.
Honestly, I can’t believe how much the stock muffler was holding it back.

I installed the MagnaFlow 12255 — 2.25" in/out, 5x9x20" oval body. It's a straight-through design flowing about 475 CFM, compared to the very restrictive stock unit.

If anyone’s considering an easy, safe, and highly effective exhaust upgrade, this is it.
Zero CEL, zero complications, and total driving satisfaction.

Cheers.

EUploading a few videos — and no, I’m definitely not a pro at filming sound clips 😂 ( sorry …)
But I did record it in a few real driving scenarios so you guys can get the vibe.

Just a reminder: $130 for the MagnaFlow 12255 + $70 for install = total $200. Shop took 18 minutes. Cut, weld, done. Perfect fit. Totally transformed the truck. 🔥👌
I also changed the stock muffler on my 23 EB for a Flowmaster FX which is also a straight through oval design with similar results. Combined with a S&B intake system big difference when intake and exhaust restrictions are improved.

The point that got me here is going up to 6,500 rpm. Then the 8,000 rpm (really?) That’s getting into Honda etc in the Indy league. P.S. Ashley Force just set a new world record for the quarter mile, I’ve always loved John Force, and Ashley and Brittney!

" In essence, any change to the exhaust system that affects the flow and composition of the exhaust gases can impact the O2 sensor's readings. It's crucial to ensure that any modifications are done correctly to avoid affecting the sensor's accuracy. " Just saying systems are designed to work as designed.

I have been wondering if adding a resonator would help with the drone/resonance I am hearing. And quiet down the cold start up. I understand that is more restriction, but I ok with that if it helps my situation.

Any chance you are going to Ford Carlisle in June? Would love to hear yours in person.
If you are thinking to fix the drone and the harsh sound a resonator is a very good idea.
Some good options are:

  • Vibrant Ultra Quiet 17950 (very good to cut drone)
  • Magnaflow 10416 (good balance between flow and sound)
  • Borla XR1 resonator (makes a sporty nice tone)
If you really want to calm down the cold start and the highway drone, I would say Vibrant Ultra Quiet is the best. 👌
It's not about kill the sound, its about make it better and deepe

I’m thinking about going to Ford's event ! It’s about a 3.5-hour drive from me. will be in touch✌

Lol

With today's tech I don't understand how some people still like any sound from a car at all. I'm old enough to have loved muscle cars but the day I rode in a car with significant power and nearly no obnoxious noise I was like, wow this is amazing. Anything less sounds broken.

Now anytime I hear a loud car on the road my thoughts are one of two:

"Can't keep that thing maintained and quiet huh?"

Or

"Wow, that car/owner is screaming ... For attention."

Sorry OP, I don't think you're mod is not that loud based on videos. However, I think the above is why you are getting some backlash. Well that and this is the Internet after all en💩ification runs rampant 🤣.

Always nice to see people willing to do their own work and tinker!
All good man! 😎 I get it — not everyone likes to hear the engine play. I respect that. For me, it's not about loud or screaming... it's about letting the motor breathe better and sound alive without being annoying. And yeah — always fun to tinker and improve what you drive. Thanks for your comment!

I must officially be old since I see no reason to spend money to replace a brand new part that functions as designed. Plus I wouldn't want the hassle of proving it didn't cause an issue with the emissions if a warranty problem came up.

A muffler should have no way to impact the emissions system or sensor readings in any way. The 1st O2 sensors are near the engine itself, before the CAT. there is usually 1 more after the CAT. to monitor the cat's performance. The only way a muffler could be used to void a warranty claim is if that dealer was notably less than honest..

And yes... as we get older it becomes less and less practical/sensible to swap out properly functioning parts for no good reason. But..Increased performance, for many, is a pretty good reason.. and opening up the system for better flow can certainly help a boosted engine work more effectively derestricting the exhaust system is a real thing with boost.

Many of us prefer to drive a vehicle that sounds like it has a least small balls, vs runs off a sewing machine... ;)

Honestly, not really worth it on the Hybrid
The engine sound on the hybrid is pretty minimal by design, and the exhaust flow needs are way lower. You could change it, but you wouldn’t get the same gains or feeling as on the EcoBoost. Different animal
