“Caution: Shift By Wire, Follow Special Instructions To Transport Vehicle.”
Perhaps there are some test cases where if the vehicle were to die flat (not unheard of for the Maverick) then test personnel would need to be aware that (as per the MY2022 user's manual P.186/187) they have to manually pull a strap + lever (under a cover below the center console) to override the "shift by wire" lock to bring the transmission into neutral so that the vehicle can be rolled on/ rolled off a transporter/ carrier if the vehicle is not able to do it under its own power ... just a guess.

An AWD hybrid option would be great. My wife's '22 Escape has the hybrid AWD system and its been a great option for rough weather and getting back to some hard-to-reach fishing spots. I'd be a little less excited about a PHEV variant though.

My wild speculation.

A super interesting design would be if Ford took the Magna axle approach. That would be to have an EcoBoost engine up front in FWD mode, with an all new electric back axle connected to a battery. That gives AWD without any need to transfer power from front to rear. Magna provides a rear axle that drops right in and does this.

Imagine the power this thing would have. 350+ HP? Given the skid plates and the lift kit, I don't think this is a prototype aiming at particularly high fuel economy. This is all about being a bad-a--.

I'm going with a PHEV AWD system.

The black box on the side looks like it supports both Level 1 and Level 2 charging ports. (2 different wires of different sizes)

Also, we know that there are PHEV versions of the Escape and Corsair that already exist...

https://www.lincoln.com/luxury-suvs/corsair/models/grand-touring/

...and there seems to be a PHEV Bronco Sport in development (Bound to incldue AWD for sure)

A PHEV AWD maverick would make the most sense.

My predictions:

1) It will be the MOST EXPENSIVE model made yet. Some people will balk at the price. I'm going to assume $45k-$50k. Ford still wants to sell to these people though so they're hoping that the government tax credit will help. Ford is already greasing the wheels on this.

2) Even though it will be the most expensive model, it will sell out immediately. Not in the first month.. probably within the first 48-72 hours.
When the Maverick was released in Brazil, they sold out in 24 hours.
I think many of the first year buyers were torn between fuel efficiency and off-road capability. If you can have both in one package, people will line up.

A PHEV still runs on gas too, it just has a bigger battery so it can go longer on pure electric.

But if it is a pure EV, that is the perfect place to run the cables because I believe there's a void where the extra battery pack can be installed. All manufactures are shooting for EV's by the end of the decade.

if it is a PHEV you wouldn’t be far off MSRp wise. Have you seen reports about the Mach-E? Production costs have gone up iver $25k per car, mainly due to lithium raw material costs. So if there is still a full $7,500 tax incentive this is probably a good ball park. I currently drive an F150 and impatiently awaiting to see what variants are launch on the new Ranger.
my next vehicle will be a Ranger or Maverick more than likely. Also considering a couple other EV and PHEV. I really want an AWD PHEV with a bed or decent cargo room. But i would settle for a 2.0 Maverick as well.

You can see orange wires near the frame under the door passenger side
The orange tape on handle tells anybody that if the door is opened the compartment is full of high voltage energy.
