The big drawback I see is needing to take them in and out every time to use the air conditioner

If you do not use "recirculate" air, I predict no difference. And if you do, probably minimal difference. Maybe turn the blower up by one digit over usual.
I have a set on the way.
I'll report findings after a few days.
Highway use. Noise or hopefully lack of.
How they do in a hot parking lot.
Etc.

My concern is being "slits" and covered slits at that, maybe the ventilation would be very slight. But maybe not. I figured worth a shot. Plus I thought they are kind of cool looking
