Blue Ox had a similar problem on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Failures on the road resulted in a redesign. Blue Ox denied replacing the original. That’s when I said “never again will I buy Blue Ox”

if you have the time to manually watch it, a DC clamp on amp meter is your friend. Very handy and noninvasive.
