I think I may do an inverter in the end, one that has a low voltage shutoff. I don't plan to use a big inverter or a lot of power but its nice to have peace of mind with the auto shutoff. What inverter did you go with?

Just bought the identical socket, but I'm going to install the setup into a small project box that i tuck away in the cubby, I can pull it out when I need it and charge things in the bed. Almost like a 12v power station on an extension cord. (I have a bed cap)
