I will go on an educated guess, having had an Escape, that it is the spot to line up the windshield wipers to park if you ever have to remove the armature from the gearbox. The escape had lines top and bottom of where to install them notched out of the black in the windshield.

Just to comment on this group thought, no it's not over reaching. Outside the black surround the window is rectangular not rounded on the corner. The problem is more likely that it is on intermittent and is pausing, parking as the delay is just too long, then making the next wipe.
