You tow too much... Do you want to be part of the "look what I can tow with my Hybrid" club, or just not worry about it?
I'd be in the "wow I can tow with a hybrid" club, but I don't have a pop-up, or a boat.
Maybe not older, but different. PSD has been around since 1971. I'm speaking as an owner of the HF35 and HF45 drivetrains, PSD designs. There are many others, most using conventional transmissions. The Explorer Hybrid is one where a lot of conventional drivetrain wisdom would apply.
The...
You're not thinking like a PSD gearset. It can transfer engine power to either the wheels (parallel), or to the charging motor (series mode).
These are AC synchronous motors. RPM is controlled by AC frequency, independent of torque. They turn both ways, and can deplete or charge the HVB in...
Sorry, compounded confusion on my part.
The HF35 internal ratios are well documented in the Weber State videos linked by several folks. Do I understand that the 10.3 : 1 ratio is combining final drive with one of the planetary gearset ratios? If so, it's a tooth-count ratio, not a speed ratio...
I've previously posted Fuelly data for the 2020 Escape Hybrid showing achieved mileage of 30 to 45 MPG. Maverick ought to be a couple less.
Winter is fun, but cold sucks. The ICE stays cold all the time unless you turn on the heat, and say goodbye to 40 mpg. (Expect fuel in the oil without...
I've seen torque/HP curves for the gas side, so they're out there.
Electric motor torque/HP curves are generic. Peak torque occurs at 0 RPM, but so does peak current load, so all of these motors are current limited in the constant torque region, from 0 RPM to the "torque peak" where current...
There are two ways tires can hurt MPG
- higher rolling resistance in some tires
- increased aerodynamic drag due to changes in wheel well air flow with a larger tire.
OE options include 235/65R17, so that's likely safe on both accounts.
Battery technology before Li-ion was not well suited to vehicular use. Ni-metal hydride batteries will die. Li-ion will not (unless mistreated). This is an old chart; C-Max product experience says it's accurate. Folks with Hybrids over 200K say they don't notice any difference. (Energi "keep it...
There are no changes in gear ratios, only changes in shaft speed ratios. Let's focus on the PSD, that little planetary gearset that's used in a unique way (patent #US3732751). This diagram has details specific to the original 2013 C-Max (62mph limits were removed), but the layout's the same as...
That depends. Brake proportioning will use the rear brakes to balance front-axel regen braking, so rear brakes will wear out like normal cars. And there's a downside to not using the brakes - corrosion - for those of us who live with salt in the snow season.
Sadly, this is untrue at each point.
- the transmission runs the engine faster when you ask for more power, and any road speed. How does that differ from downshifting?
- the electric drivetrain can absorb much of the downhill energy before you need engine braking.
- on flatter terrain, you...
In fairness, there are three modes to PnG.
- pulse using the engine to gain speed, climb hills (slowly to charge the HVB)
- glide using EV to nearly maintain speed, mostly on flat or downhill terrain
- coast using neither whenever possible
In this system, "coast" will require throttle. The...
Yep. You're thinking of conventional drivetrains with an electric motor added like Hyundai's (wife has a Sonata hybrid). Ford's hybrids have the TRW power split device, using the "charger" MG to start the ICE.
It's kind of obvious that the subwoofer we see is too small to act as a subwoofer, without some sort of resonant cavity. In Escape, the subwoofer is ported into the fender. Many Escape owners know this because they had to tear the thing apart to eliminate a loud BUZZZZZ around 65Hz.
Any idea...
TBN was 2.1, and that's not low for used oil. My baseline is the C-Max, which includes un-used oil data. Water in the oil was interesting.
All my end-of-life TBN are in this range, the first at 0.5. Note the last oil change was sampled twice because it took 2 years to get close to 10K change...
Make that Regular E0 for the hybrid and we agree. Hybrids can benefit from the higher energy content. EcoBoost will never notice.
... and you'd never buy ethanol free. Put cheap gas in the EcoBoost and 90E0 in the hybrid for a meaningful cost comparison.
