My display did more than "freeze up at times," it froze up period. When I drove up to the dealer and backed in to a parking spot, it froze up on the backup camera! The Technician in Service did a Reset by turning on the radio, then long pressing the On/Off Volume knob (p. 397 in Owner's Manual)...

After navigating to Settings>Clock, and adjusting the time with the Up/Down icons, hit the Settings icon at the lower right of the screen -- this will set the clock to what you adjusted it to. I then hit the Home icon at the upper left of the screen to get back to the "normal" view.

I too have had issues with the time setting being lost back to --:--. No clue what causes this. However, I also had trouble just setting it. I discovered that, after entering the correct time, hit the Settings icon at the lower right of the screen -- this will set the time you adjusted to. Then...
