  1. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

The Nest was neither evolution nor revolution. It was a Thor acquisition and an odd one at that.
  2. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

I try to stay off the interstates as much as possible when towing the Bambi with the Maverick so I can keep the speed in the fuel consumption sweet spot of 55-60 mph. The passes were both on US395: Conway Summit 8,138 ft Deadman Summit 8,036 ft Conway is the highest point on US395. For...
  3. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

Standard equipment on the Bambi. Camera (and mic!) on the back of Bambi, powered by the tail light circuit. Dash (or suction cup) mounted 12v (cig lighter plug) color monitor in the cab of the Mav It helps but once you have used proper towing mirrors nothing else compares :-(
  4. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

I'm a fan of the SuperDuty ('24 F250 w/6.7 HO) and use it to pull a 7300 pound GVW Airstream. But that SuperDuty + Flying Cloud combination is more than 50 feet long and that makes it a challenge on the Wa$hington $tate Ferry $ystem and in state parks. The Maverick + Bambi did excellent and...
  5. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

I agree 20 mpg is very impressive considering the dismal 15 mpg or so at (just slightly) higher speeds. 55-60 is a sweet spot!
  6. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

When I bought my SuperDuty I was amused by the number of owners who were putting "leveling kits" on their SuperDuty to "fix" the difference in the gap between the top of the front tire & front fender and the top of the rear tire & rear fender. And in this community some have the same "leveling...
  7. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

Lessons learned over these 3,800 miles of towing: Anti-sway is useful but not a panacea 55-60 mph is a sweet spot for fuel consumption (20mpg) and range (285 mi/tank) The ProTrailer hitch up assistance works as claimed but isn't as fast as a practiced driver using the backup camera The trailer...
  8. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

Here is a pic from the southern terminus of our "Just a couple of days to check out how the Maverick does towing Bambi and lets see what happens…" trip Bambi By Mav-light?
  9. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

A couple more updates: "tested" the anti sway when a hi performance car driven by a lo performance driver tried to occupy the same space as the Mav. Mr LoPerf was weaving thru heavy traffic at 30 mph over the pace and put several people onto the shoulder to avoid him. My swerves to avoid him...
  10. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

Couple updates: Pulled two 8,000 ft passes on US-395, with no issues. Temp stayed right at thermostat. But got stuck in Bishop (again!) CAL DOT was saying "A High Wind Advisory Is In Effect From Bishop (Inyo Co) To The Nevada State Line" but that "advisory" was a prohibition for "High...
  11. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

As others have noted on this thread, Airstreams aerodynamics are well established. Even the (heated) underbelly area is relatively clean aerodynamically. I had a 16ft Jayco before buying a 25 ft Airstream Flying Cloud. The Jayco was as aerodynamic as a shoe box. The Jayco's Murphy Bed...
  12. Lariat Hybrid tow test: Airstream Bambi (3500 GVW)

Ford’s Towing Guide for the Maverick shows a Lariat towing an Airstream Bambi 16 Sport and notes that the 53Q 4K Tow Package is required for trailers over 2,000 pounds. The diminutive Bambi 16 Sport is the runt of the Airstream line at just 3,500 GVW. My Hybrid Lariat has the 53Q package and so...

Weigh Safe ball mounts are way cool!
  14. trailer hitch recommendation

It's a small price premium over competitive adjustable ball mounts with multiple balls. As you noted its not price competitive with a simple non-adjustable (but flippable) ball mount with a single ball. There is also an inherent safety issue with any ball mount without height adjustments and...
  15. trailer hitch recommendation

Ancient tent trailers below 2000 pounds used to use 1-7/8. But if you encounter such a trailer a new coupler is a better fix than a matching ball.
