Amateur Radio Mobile Operation

Hello from Ohio , I don't have an Amateur Radio License but I do have a 2nd Class Radio Telephone license , that I have not used in thirty years, I used to repair , tune and install Mobile Radios and Mobile Phones ,before Cell Phones made most of those obsolete. I was just curious about your Club and how the effects of RF on modern cars, I remember installing a Car Phone in a Delorean and the 100 watt transmitter would energize a relay bank causing the wipers to go on when the transmitter was keyed. We ended up having to fabricate a shield for the relay bank , so I can imagine the possible complications of installling a Two Way Radio in a Maverick. Of course Police still use radios and they are driving modern cars.

I previously owned a Hyundai Santa Cruz with the same equipment installed and on some HF frequencies talking on the radio ar about 250 watts caused the car to go into the limp mode with reduced power unless I shut the engine off and restarted to clear the problem. I have not yet had any problem with the Maverick. I have the ecoboost engine and AWD.

I had an early model Kia that would shift out of electronic overdrive 4th gear back into 3rd gear when keying up my 250 watt amplifier, very annoying! Seems the Maverick is pretty well insulated from RF though. Have you thought of getting a license? I had my doubts as a CBer but it's great to have for fun and emergency comms as well. I currently hold a General class license.
