Ok. I get it. Seems mpg is more of an issue than I thought. Just used to lack of miles I put on personal vehicles and never give much thought others might drive.

Tell me more about the hybrid. Runs mostly on the electric motor? Does it offer any kind of get home mode? Meaning if electric fails will it run on the combustion engine only?

It’s not the immediate cost savings and according to the driving test the performance is comparable. It’s about the mileage, once you wrap your head around every time you hit the brakes or coast down a hill you charge the battery and increase your mileage. Hybrids are a great in between step to full EV.

The system has evolved since this article and is more efficient and more advanced but the premise remains the same.

If you don't know about it already I wouldn't bother too much as you won't be seeing one for at least 15 months.

How so? More than 2/3 the hp comes from the gas engine.

Haven't posted in a bit and can't tell if these statements are deliberately obtuse and/or intended to to try to bring out people's anger, but here goes...

The Maverick hybrid (likely basically every other hybrid on the market) uses both the electric and gas motors in concert. The electric motor will run at low speeds or kick in when coasting/not a lot of power is needed. Say you're on a regular two lane road and stopped at a light: when you accelerate away from the light the electric motor will provide the initial low speed push off the line, and then above a certain speed the gas motor will take over to provide the power; once you reach cruising speed and back off the throttle the vehicle will kick back over to the electric motor to maintain momentum until you put your foot down again and the gas motor comes back on.

The battery recharges through regenerative braking on a standard hybrid and both through braking and plugging it in for a plug-in hybrid. If you happen to be driving in traffic for a long time, the battery will run down to the point where you're only running on the gas motor, but that doesn't happen often, and if for some reason it does, the gas motor will get you home just fine.

In mine and a lot of others' experience, hybrids actually get some of their best mileage on long, flat/rolling roads where you're at a cruising speed of 40-55mph. They also do a lot better in stop and go traffic than a regular gas motor because of the electric motor getting you off the line.

It's economics for me.

I look at every expense as a percentage of income.

I believe that the price of gas will remain above $3 a gallon and that an additional road use tax is in our near future.

The current inflation rate is not a short term situation.

We are minimalists in that we don't have to have the biggest, best or most expensive. We are also not "cheap" in that we do without or do with lessor quality or quantity because we don't want to spend money.

The hybrid Maverick XLT checks all our boxes for comfort, function and cost of ownership.

Anything above the 28k OTD we are spending, is money spent with no real return on investment .

Some seem upset I asked. I really was just curious as why so many want a hybrid.
Didn't read all the replies but why would anyone get upset over a personal choice, question?

Higher fuel economy, lower cost, better stop-start functionality, should be lower maintenance too (turbo charged engines tend to be harder on oil, and when direct injection only like the Ecoboost will eventually carbonfoul which is a messy cleanup). Maverick Hybrid I'm hoping will be bulletproof like a Prius Hybrid.

Why so much interest in the hybrid? Just curious. Lower hp. Is mpg difference that important to many? Or is it cost?
For me it is all about the cost of traveling back and forth to work. I drive a 2007 Silverado work struck, 14mpg. I am using $60+ per week just to drive to work.
If I can cut that by 62%, 14mpg vs 37mpg I am way ahead of the game budget wise...

I live in the San Francisco Bay area. Gas prices are higher here than most of the nation. We also have a lot of stop and go. This truck makes sense here.

Reading all the reasons people give...Ford really had a great idea.
Now if there just are no hidden gremlins.
I just did a hybrid Lariat on the configuraor. Like $30k with delivery charge.
What’s the average OTD F150 price today? Maybe $48-50k?
And most owners hardly use the load bed...

Lots of the same thing that everyone else said. Was excited when I first heard about the Maverick, when I learned that I can have that and >35mpg I placed my order.

I was on Team Ranger even after seeing Maverick pics leaked. Once I heard price and hybrid I switched to Team Maverick. I have wanted a truck for some time. This is the first new vehicle I have ever purchased. Currently driving a civic and the hybrid gets better fuel economy.

The "Atkinson engine" is a gas engine. Atkinson engines are used in conjunction with electric engines for (I believe) all hybrids sold in the U.S. They have proven to be very reliable (including this very engine, in Ford hybrids), while the 2L ecoboost has pretty mediocre reliability.
