I hear it all the time how small the Maverick is, but maybe it's only small compared to the behemoths today's full sized trucks have become. Here is my Mav parked behind my 1999 Grand Marquis, a real full sized land yacht.

Even though it's shorter overall the Maverick looks quite large to me, what do you think?

I was wondering if I was the only one not understanding that many references the Maverick as a compact? I just don't understand this. If cars go by interior volume to determine size, mid, compact, sub compact why is the Maverick referred to as compact? It has more interior volume than many mid-size trucks. If it's body on frame vs unitized body than why is the Ridgeline considered Mid-size?

If you go by cargo volume space in the bed, once again it's similar or more cargo volume or payload than mid or full size trucks.

I consider it mid size because it's definitely not full size but seems to fit right in with other so called mid-size trucks. Just curious on what your thoughts are. Better yet what determines a truck to be considered mid-size vs compact or sub compact in trucks.

Or there is no one determining factor and it's all nick names other than a full size truck?

I came this close to returning my Maverick two minutes off the dealer lot two years back. Because it is a horrific pig of a vehicle compared to the two-door Ranger I traded in. It's grown on me since, but I still consider the Maverick a bloated fat whale. Of course comparing the Maverick to my old Ranger is laughable because that Ranger was lovable but truly primitive (axle hop, leaf suspension, body on frame, noisy, horrific handling, zero safety tech, and gutless).

That said, I totally respect that people coming from bigger trucks consider the Maverick to be a svelte, petite ballet dancer. Like the thread says, it's all about perspective.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a smaller market entry later this decade. Because of the perverse incentives of the CAFE regulations, it will have to be a BEV - you literally cannot build a truly small ICE truck these days because CAFE gets stricter as the wheelbase gets smaller - our idiot political masters at work.

Mav is nearly 2 feet longer than my Honda CRV and almost a foot longer than my Subie Forester Sport. I think the long wheelbase helps give it a rather smooth ride. I would not consider it a compact but, it’s not fair to compare it to the monster pickup trucks on the road today. That’s like putting a LearJet and a 737 in the same class. They each have their different advantages and applications but, they are too different to be fairly compared.

The Maverick is approximately the same size as the Nissan Frontier, the older Chevy Colorado, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac & Dodge DeRango.

And the best part is it fits in my garage with her sister...a Kia Sorento

Was the 2011 Ford Ranger not a compact? The Maverick is 4 inches shorter than the extended cab old Ranger, albeit a bit wider.

Back in 1983 the original Motorweek review for the Ranger called it a midsize truck which was puzzling to me until they parked it between an F150 and a Courier.

Size categories can be a little bit squishy but we already have full size trucks and midsize trucks and the Maverick is smaller than both of them so what else are we going to call it?

Whether or not it is too big for your tastes in absolute terms is a different question.
