My wife and i drove our Mavericks to get gas. I folliwed her out of the gas station and for a few miles I noticed a little gas spilling from under the spout area. It stopped shortly. Not topping off anymore with this no gas cap thing! TM
I have had no issues with topping mine off with a click or two extra.

I have had two Toyotas.

Those we NEED to top off.
There is a design error whereas the "air" inside cannot escape. Click. Wait a minute. Add 2 more gallons. Click. Wait a minute. Add 1 more gallon. Click. Wait a minute. Add 0.5 gallon.

3.5 gallons times 45 MPG = 157 extra miles. Yes. It's worth it.

In the Maverick Hybrid, no need to do this. After first click, it's 99.8% full. At least mine is.
Wow! Should of bought the hybrid šŸ˜•

Especially with Hybrids. They have a pressurized fuel system. It's not so bad with an EB but manual specifically states do not top off Hybrids.

You need to be followed to see if you're losing any gas.
Sounds like the conversation is getting passionate with some folks. :)

I realize what the manual says and have read it (for the folks emphasizing it).

I have not been followed by anyone specifically looking for gas leaks. I have been followed on a few road trips where we had multiple vehicles and left a gas station as the lead vehicle. None of the trailing vehicles reported any gas spillage (or other liquids) from my Maverick.

My "fill up" process has been two quick clicks after the nozzle pressure has triggered the initial stop. I have not tried to eek out anything beyond that.

I hope that makes sense.

Duh.

I guess it's better than coming in and going "This FORD sucks. I can't even top of the fuel tank" :ROFLMAO:

At least now you know. Don't top em off. Once it clicks, that's all she gets.
I'd be happy to know what "topping off" is supposed to achieve? It certainly doesn't save you any money. Anyone?......

I had an issue with a faulty gas pump handle that didn't shut off and overfilled and cause the check engine light to come on. This seems to be a common problem when I Googled it so I found a couple YouTube videos on the fix and did that but the light stayed on. I had just returned from a trip to North Carolina so I took it to the dealer oil change and ask them to see if they would clear the check engine light to see if my fix at work, but they refused. So I made an appointment for the following week to come in and they checked it and ordered a new filler valve and in the meantime why was waiting for the part the check engine light went out and has never come back on. Stop feeling just like the manual says and you won't have a problem

Here’s an example: Some gas pumps deliver gas at a much higher rate than others. When gassing up at one of those pumps, I give it another squeeze after the first ā€œclick-off.ā€ If I didn’t, I’d end up with a 3/4 full tank. When the pump delivers gas at a slower rate, I don’t top off. Because my tank is full.

There's a message inside the filler door that says to wait 5 seconds before removing nozzle as well.

My last car was a Focus which I topped off almost ever fill up. Come to find out that what happened was the overflow went into some kind of EVAP canister to filled up. It threw a check engine light and a few problems with the engine. Notably starting issues. Something to do with the fuel line return. It cost a few hundred dollars to fix and I no longer top off any vehicle.

One squeeze I think would be fine, just not repeated over and over. The tank needs some airspace for the fuel tank evaporative emissions solenoid to work properly. Overfilling can allow fuel to enter it, which then usually requires a fairly costly and unnecessary replacement.

It's a placebo effect.

More gas + longer distance.

The cost is ruining the evap system and like you said, certainly isn't saving money by getting more gas anyways.
