I learned recently the hard way. I left my wipers pulled back from windshield. I turned the vehicle on and whooosh, scratch Yikes!!
Peeled the paint off the hood edge like it was butter. I had know idea an auto feature such as existed. I think it sucks big time!!

Never do that, the wipers arms are only meant to bend that way only for changing the blade.

I mentioned this in another post, and got, you need to read the manual. Well I just think it’s a poor design. First automobile I’ve owned with this issue.

I recently took mine off and put them in wrong. So for now they are up about 15 percent. Got tired and gave up, figured it gave it some character

If the ignition was turned off with the wipers in use and they stopped in anything but the park position, when the ignition is switched on they will either run or try to park if the wiper switch was turned off at any point. That would be normal operation. If they activated just from the act of pulling them back, then something is off.

I always buy matching touch up paint and put it in the glove box for these very things!

Back when my Saturn Vue was shiny and new I accidentally closed my garage door while the lift gate was open. The garage door successfully closed the lift gate for me, but it put a 1/8” by 3” gash in the paint (right down to bare metal). Fortunately it was on the edge of a contoured part by the license plate. I grabbed the touch up paint, lifted the lift gate up so that I could get a good thick coat of paint in the gash and did my best to make it disappear. 15 years later I think I am the only person that knows where the defect is.

I'm not sure why someone would do it this time of year but around my area it is very common to pull up the wipers during the winter so they don't freeze to the windshield. Much easier on the blades and makes scraping a bit easier too.

one nice thing with wiper de-iceing blades, once engaged it un-freeze the wipers for you. i have not yet tested this feature as i got my 2023 Lariet Hybrid near the end of April but i'm sure it help in the northeast Ohio winter months.

They just put the manual in the glove box to take up room. There isn't any meaningful info in it is there?
Yes there is, a ton of it . It's just like anything else, you need to read the instructions. All vehicles are not the same.
