Why is the license plate on the right and not on the left?

Why is the license plate on the right and not on the left? When the parallel parked shouldn't the plate be visible from the street?

I don’t care so much about whether people can view the plate while street parked. Seems 90% of photos on here are of owners with suburban neighborhood homes and garages.

I guess if you owe on your truck, don’t make payments, and park on the street, a repo truck might appreciate seeing the plate easier.

Obviously most people are right handed! And I don't care that we read from left to right. Most of us anyway.....

You pass the answer everyday .... it's on the signal poles , the light poles, etc.... All those cameras and sensors looking down on you - see the right side easier than the left do to the nature of where these tracking devices are placed along the road

On the SC coast we have parallel parking, and police that have license plate readers, which find a lot of bad guys.

As long as it's visible from behind, it doesn't matter which side it's on. My street only has parking on the left side, so I guess my plate will be more visible when parked in front of my house.

Truth be told the reason engineers put the plate on the right side, is the trailer wiring is always on the the left of the hitch. Mounting it on the right side mounts it closest to center of the space that is left after the hitch and trailer wiring sockets are installed.
