Something for the cubby that's on top of and behind the touchscreen.

Hey, so there's a rectangular cubby on the dash that's behind the touchscreen. I was wondering if anyone can think of a way to make something that fits in there that can hold a phone upright in portrait mode so you can use it for gps navigation that way? I know people have things for that cubby next to the touchscreen, and you can buy regular vent clips to go on the a/c vents, but I think having it higher in the view would mean less looking down and off the road to see the screen?

Why not use the touchscreen for navigation?

As for using the sunglass holder on the dash for a phone mount, you're basically just talking about gluing/taping a ball socket down. I'm sure someone could crank that out with a 3d printer in 5 minutes, no problem, but the chances of it surviving summer heat are probably low. Unless you really glue that thing in permanently, which seems unwise when there is a GPS screen right below it.

Why would you need to glue it though? Can't someone design like an insert that sits right in that space with like a little rectangle section that can hold your phone upright?

And is there a way to use the touchscreen for navigation without installing any new apps on the phone? I guess I'll connect it through the android auto and see how that works...

There's no sharp corners in that thing to prop against. I'd expect anything you set a heavy phone on in there is going to roll.

Maybe. But I thought the shape was deeper than it is wide so it shouldn't do that though.

Yes, connect through Android Auto and use Google maps or Waze.

wouldn't that really block your view out the windshield? i'm 6ft tall and sometimes have the lower portion under the rearview mirror block me as i have to bend down to look out for different things..the phone already has upright position in the lower console area and/or like they've already said easy to hook your phone up using that as navigation on the 8" touch screen. just my thought/opinion.

To be honest, I don't see the advantage of abandoning the Car Play or Android play built in to the vehicle. Not much difference in height and why swap out a larger screen for a much smaller one? Also, there's a flat area to the right of that tray you speak of which is specifically designed to hold an accessory suction cup mounting.

I'm going to do the android auto thing and see if it's not too much of an inconvenience. I don't like keeping things like bluetooth on all of the time when I'm not using it, and right now my phone charging usb cable is connected to the one that's always on, because the data port only turns on when the key is in the on position and sometimes I like to just keep my phone charging in my car while I'm not in it. So either way I would have to do some connecting or changing of things if I want to use Android Auto. I absolutely do not want to take phone calls on my car audio because then everyone will hear my entire conversation, so I never use that. Which is why I don't have my setup to where everything connects automatically every time...

So just for the way I like to use my stuff, it's just faster to just pull up the gps on my phone and go rather than connect things to my car and then do it from there. But I'll try it out...

Well said. Thank you for taking the time to explain your reasons.

Some members will no doubt be concerned about limiting windshield visibility above the touchscreen. We've already heard from several posters on this forum who feel distress about their rear view visibility...

Oh one of the first things I did was remove both headrests from the back seat. Very much improves rear visibility.

I just gave it a try, it's a little annoying because I do have to switch the USB cable from my charger in the port that's always on to the data port which only charges when the car key is in the on position, but other than that it seems to work alright. I guess I'll just get used to using Android Auto...

I have one of these Cell Phone Holder in my Ranger in the dash cubby. I'm pretty sure it won't fit in the Maverick without some trimming. The legs that hold the phone are adjustable and removable, I've checked and they will fit in that space, so it would feasible to hold a phone in Portrait mode.

On longer trips I'm fine setting up android auto, but on short trips here and there its more convenient to just have the navigation on the phone only. Personally I think having the phone up on the dash is safer than having it down in the bottom.
