The Maverick is leaps and bounds ahead of the current Tacoma in ride comfort and seating ergonomics! Toyotas has always put reliability above comfort...I think the Maverick will have both once the platform settles in...

I wouldn't call driving with my knees under my chin comfortable. It sucks, too. I would have bought the Tacoma for the reliability, but the 159hp just killed it for me, or maybe it did me a favor. I was also considering the Corolla Cross, the new mini-RAV4, which also happens to have 159hp. While I'm assuming it's a lighter vehicle, I don't think I could go back to a sewing machine engine. Love my Accord, and I'll have to check what sort of HP my 2008 Element and 2002 Civic had back in the day. Neither of those rides felt slow at all, but that could be because they were all manual trans.

(Edit: Did some homework and the 2002 Civic LX MT got 115HP out of a 1.7L, and the 2008 Element LX MT got 166HP from a 2.4L engine.)

I also had a 1998 Civic hatchback CX model that got a laughable 106HP out of a 1.6L. That car was a warhorse, and I'd love to find one that's been loved with very few miles on it. A buddy of mine was lucky enough to score a mint condition 1985 Honda CRX with MT from a little old lady who couldn't drive any more.

I rather have a pre 16 Tacoma base ordered mavrick because dplan will eventually get a taco once prices get back to normal not paying 20k plus with 100k on clock

The Tacoma was once a reliable all around great pickup truck that WAS affordable for anyone. Now, it is out of reach for most people who just want a cheap no frills pickup truck. It is over 30k after taxes/fees in most states for the cheapest model and gets worse MPG than a Tundra. It has been hipster-ized and way too many useless features were added to drive up the price. Toyota loves to make it sound all off-roady but it is just a pickup truck at the end of the day. Some 17 year old kid in a $3000 1995 lifted Pathfinder/4-Runner will outpace you on any offroad trail.

It is also bigger than it needs to be. If Toyota brought back the 1998-2002 body and charged a normal price for it, people WILL buy it like crazy.

I miss my 88’ Toyota 4x4 with the first year of the V6 That I bought new. It was a fun truck with the manual 5-speed but only a regular cab so it didn‘t have much room. It was slower Than molasses once I put a 4” lift with 38” tires.

Just right. Right after I got the Maverick it seemed like when exiting the vehicle it was a little bit like getting out of a tub in that you had to lift your feet a little bit more that I was used to to get out. After having it a few weeks it is not an issue at all now.
I agree with you..like getting out of the tub, still getting used to it.

The Mav is what the 90's toyota pickup should have become. Instead they let it get bloated.

I would make the same case for the Ranger.

Definitely not a Toyota guy, far from it. Never owned, never will. The 1st thing that gets me down on em after I get past the styling is how weird the seating feels to me. Like they built it for North America, but kept the seat position for the average Japanese. It just doesnt fit, things I want to reach are far and things I dont are close. Other things I depend on for bracing/resting of limbs feel flimsy. Sure they have a reliable motor and stole their axle design from Ford(best one ever 9") but no can do for me.
every time I ride in my friends Tacoma.....I hate the seat being so low to the floorboards

The Taco is a great truck but there is something seriously strange about the driving/seating position and the interior proportions in general.
My father has a 2nd gen, and I briefly looked at the 3rd gen last time I bought a truck. Was never really a contender as the smaller trucks were (5 or 6yrs ago anyways) more expensive and got no better MPG or anything than a full size, but the 3rd gen just came out so had to check it out since it was new. OMG, just like my fathers 2nd gen, the 3rd as well were both the strangest most uncomfortable vehicle I have ever sat in! I dunno how anyone can be comfortable in those things unless they have super short straight kneeless legs!

Absolutely. It's like nobody notices how many 90's toyota pickups are still out there. Judging by the popularity of the maverick, there is a lot of pent up demand for a small pickup. I'd been saying for years that if they remade my old 1990 toyota pickup with AWD and a crew cab I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And here we are.

This is why I’m going new. 4x4 Taco with under 150k miles is stupid expensive and not worth the price.

The Tacoma is a great truck if you are looking for solid off road mid-size truck. But it is old tech, old layout and rides….well like a truck. When we were looking to move on from our 2004 F150 we were going to downsize to the Tacoma but after looking, shopping comparing features, prices - and being honest that we were not going offroad just hauling house stuff and sports equipment…

Well we decided on the Ridgeline for a lot of the reasons folks Today have landed on the Maverick. Now with 50K miles and a crazy car market that lets us swap even $$, we are buying a new Maverick for the same reasons we bought the Ridgeline - it just works for us as both a family car and a weekend truck. It has the added bonus of Warranty and my wife likes the slightly smaller size. She will be main driver most of the time as I enjoy zipping around in my manual JCW F56 Mini Cooper. Lots of folks going through the same reasoning process we did - the Maverick just makes good practical sense on many levels while going for a fair price.

I have had two Tacomas back to back, both TRD offroads w 6’s… reliable, fun to own and modify and in most cases a bit more capable off-road than a Maverick. I honestly doubt you’ll ever go wrong owning a Taco, all around great trucks w awesome resale value. I just wanted to switch it up and try the Mav and a Bronco. The Mav will easily do 90% of what a Taco will do except any serious off-roading without a rear locker .
