For no reason at all I was just poking around under the hood my 3 month-old Maverick and discovered this:

Little critters love hidey holes. Airbox inlets tempt them to explore, then they find the airbox and feel safe inside the box.

You need to get some rodent repellent and coat the inside of the intake, airbox, and general area around the engine bay, maybe even get some of that tape Honda sells and wrap your exposed wiring.

A piece of hardware cloth (1/4" steel mesh) over/in the inlet will prevent ingress.
The rest of the under hood area is open season.
I find propping my hood open works, as they like places to hide, not the open air.
You can get battery zap traps that are baited with peanut butter at a hardware store.

I sprayed ACF-50 corrosion inhibitor around the engine bay for the primary purpose of keeping things uncorroded. However, the slickness should help deter nesting and rummaging by critters and if the cabling is tasted-tested the taste should be a deterrent as well. It's good for about 2 years before a respray is recommended.

Only way in is through the air intake on the grille above the radiator. Only way out alive is that same way. Turbos hate mieces to pieces. Hopefully they did not chew a hole in the air filter!

Check your cabin filter behind glove box. I have found nests there three times. Also corn stored in my hybrids air box

Could be chipmunks. I had a problem with them for years. They would fill the air box with pine cones.

Peppermint spray works well. I used it to get rid of mice in my Honda.
