What this means ...

Your Ford Maverick is being built by newly hired trainees using parts from newly established surrounding part suppliers [Translation below]

SPEAKER: Governor Pavlovich Of The State of Sonora [Where the City of Hermosillo is located].

Clip Title: "Production of The New Ford Maverick is Show of Confidence on the Sonora Plant"

What it says ...

"Besides the Bronco already built here - which is a great success ... now the Maverick pick-up will be built and it is already - being built here ... and it is generating 500 new employment positions as of today ... and obviously we all now that each Ford employee means 5 or 6 indirect employees ... and also, great news because we are going to have many more employees ...and in a few months we are going to have more than 1,200 employees at this plant"

Too bad this plant was not built in the States.
It could have been, if the average consumer wanted to pay thousands and thousands over what the Maverick is selling at.

The price of cars has very little to do with the cost of labor.

I agree. I have a neighbor who is rebuilding Michigan plants. They are highly Automated with robotics. This is not about labor alone. I dont understand how ford could cpmmit to a Mexican plant after watching Honda fight Quality issues for several years at the HRX plant. An entire line was built to reork vehicles that could not pass inspection.
I want a Maverick, but I’’ need to wait until the first several thousand are delivered and get 90 days of road time. That will likely take me into first quarter next year.

Almost makes me glad the color I picked is late availability! 😀

It,s the cost of …..Healthcare, the Union wages, SSA match, Local property tax, insurance, EPA regulation, OSHA rules, working conditions. All of which are Not in the cost structure in a vehicle produced in Mexico.

Ford's been building out of the Hermosillo plant for decades so presumably they're satisfied with the output. And any auto factory is going to have vehicles that require mid-line and end inspection quality rework.

If Ford could manufacture the Mav on Fantasy Island where it was assembled by magical gnomes who worked for free... then their labor cost would be zero. Do you think they would sell the Mav for a different price?

If I am not mistaken, I believe Hermosillo built the old Escort that was Mazda based back in the 1990's. I believe the plant moved to producing the Focus in 2000 when that car came here from Ford of Europe. This plant has been producing vehicles for Ford for many years already.

Edit: from Wikipedia - "At its inception, the plant was jointly owned by Ford and Mazda,[2] the two companies sharing production techniques. Initially all parts were shipped from Japan for final assembly of the 323 and Tracer models."

The plant opened in 1986. I believe the target demographic for the Maverick was probably not even born yet.

By the way, the Mercury Tracer was the Mercury version of the Ford Escort.
