I'm getting old. Years ago I'd have summarily dismissed your suggestion. Today it makes sense. I still take the fastest route TO work and on long trips when I'm pressed for time. But on my way HOME from work, I find myself taking one of several scenic routes on the winding 2 lane roads while driving the 50-55 speed limit. My sister once said that she'd NEVER receive a speeding ticket on her way HOME because there's no such thing as being late for home. Home ain't going nowhere . I'm adopting that philosophy. I don't really do it to save gas although it's nice to get 38- 40 mpg on the way home FROM work vs approx 31 mpg on the way TO work.

Agree 100% and I'm much the same.
I sleep til the last minute and do 5 or 10 over the speed limit on my way to work.

Then balance that with 5 or 10 under on the way home. The scenic route for me is 4 miles longer (out of 50) than the cross city route. And I get to see trees, streams, train trestles, grassy prairies, rolling hills, cows, horses, sheep, goats, and it is shady. No sun in my eyes most of the route. It's a 2-lane road vs. 8 lane freeway. Very relaxing on the way home. And often, the longer route IS the shortest time route. Like half the time it is.

Going 10 over in the morning and 10 under in the evening I'm getting 700 miles per tank in my Hybrid.

Well, in my area, depending on the day and time, driving 55 on the interstate in the right line would be survivable, but 90% of the time you'd be taken out by the rat race flowing at 80+ or taken out by road rage. The minor savings is a mute point if you want to stay accident free and survive being mangled up in a wreak. I do my best to try to stay around 5 mph over the posted limit when possible but even at that it's common for even the police to pass right on by you just cruising along

Slowing down always equates to better fuel economy, but at some point, you become a rolling hazard and it might behoove you to consider public transportation.

On the open roads I get better mpg’s at 85-90 mph that I do at 65-70 mph.
It’s just that my Ecoboost likes to be, ‘On Pipe’
It’s a Turbo thing I think.

Or the air bubble that sits in my bed,
Because I keep my tailgate up has a better shape at 90 than it does at 70.

85-90 gets me 31-32 mpg

When I was a kid during the 1973 gas crisis (which is nothing compared to what Trump's little war is costing us. $5.45 for a gallon of diesel???) Shell used to put conservation commercials on TV. One that really stuck with me was the anticipating and coasting one, along with the "pretend you have an egg under your right foot". ODB and computers not having been invented, they had wheels with mechanical gauges attached to back of their test vehicles. I'd put those habits to use my entire driving life.
Now that I have my first hybrid, my automatic coasting and accelerating habits maximize my charging and battery use. Shell for the win!

I try to drive mine like it was a hybrid. The turbo quickly gets me up to speed and then I will back off and coast up to the next light and then punch it again! If I want to save gas then I will leave the Truck in the garage and take my Wife's PHEV!!

I remember having a conversation with the better half when her commute to work was a 40 minute drive including the NYS Thruway...she felt she should not be using as much gasoline since by going faster, it meant that she was not driving as long therefore reducing the amount of fuel needed to be driving in the first place. I gently explained to her that it does not work like that and if she slowed down from 80MPH to 70-75MPH (the defacto speed limit on the Thruway), she would see a fuel economy gain that added only a few minutes to her commute. She was amazed.
