I'm trying to decide between the Rough Country hard tri fold bed cover and the Real Truck BAK Flip MX 4. I visited a truck shop and the Real Truck Undercover Ultra Flex fold up was recommended. The Rough Country one is much cheaper. The other two the same. Has anyone had experience with the Undercover Ultra Flex Fold up? Is it worth a few hundred more? Also, the truck shop wants too much money to install if I get it there. $150 for the Rough Country, and $250 for the Undercover. Everyone in the MTC has said it takes 30min to an hour to install. Should I get one or the other and pay this much for installation? Or just order it and someone I sort of know says they can install it. What do you suggest I pay him for doing it? He volunteered.
Thanks!

I've had the Rough Country hard trifold for 3.5 years so far and recommend it.
As for installation that depends how disposable your income is, but I self-installed with no previous experience and it was fine. Kind of fun actually, to learn how these things work.

Thank you so much! I really can't justify the extra costs. I will take your recommendation.
I love this truck club. Comments are so helpful. I will love my Maverick, as soon as I feel confident parking! LOL!

My Mav came with the Rough County hard tri-fold. Bought truck at Carmax. It gives you some more lockable space, especially if you may be traveling. Yeah, it can limit what you can haul, but hauling wasn't the main reason I bought the truck. Mine seems to let a little bit of water in at the tailgate. I keep adjusting it, but can't seem to get it to stop. Other than that, I'm happy.

my bak flip has been decent. it's not completely water tight but I can't imagine many are without adding some silicone caulking or something. the seams in the plastic on the top edge of the bed alone seem like they would preclude keeping water out.

I'd recommend you get a cover that either rolls up or flips up against the cabin, so you have use of the full bed length. If you had to haul any large items, the Rough Country cover would need to be completely removed.

Unless you're physically disabled, I see no reason to pay someone to install a bed cover. They simply clamp on to the bed rails, often with no tools required. Your first install might take up to 30 minutes, and every install afterward is around 5-10 minutes.

The shop you went to is incentivized to sell you the most expensive cover, and to scare you out of installing it yourself.

If you really don't want to install it yourself, $50 should be plenty for your acquaintance to install it.

I've had the Undercover Ultra Flex Tri-Fold up hard top and it's a great top however the one thing I did not like about the top was that when it's totally open with the prop rods holding it next to the rear of the cab, it totally blocks your rear view out of the truck. I currently have a BAK Revolver X4S hard roll-up top which is a great top and it allows you to see over it when it's totally open rolled up next to the rear cab.

Yeah I made this mistake, I wish I’d gone with the Revolver since the MX4 won’t even fully fold up with my bed rack.

Yea . undercover armour tonneau here and does block view . didn't bother me much since it wasn't in that position much . also use to driving with mirrors when towing travel trailer that would also block view on my previous F150 . undercover armour tonneau was very secure and was my main reason for obtaining it . It also allows it to open tailgate without opening tonneau . It was pricey but worth it to me .

Go with the tri-fold hard cover. I am 79 and I installed a hard cover by my self, was not easy because I don't have a lot of upper body strength, but I took my time and it went well.

I’ve had the BAK Flip MX4 for a year and a half and it has been great. It folds up against the back window and allows full use of the bed. I installed a seal kit for the tail gate and I get a few ounces of water in the bed, just a few drips in the corners that hasn’t hurt anything I’ve hauled. My son and I installed one on his Jeep Gladiator in less than 30 minutes, he loves his too. I got mine when they were having a special on it for $995.
Great product!

Before buying, see if the rear cross bar will support a decent amount of weight with the tailgate down (like a case of beer ) and not cause an issue with the seal when closing the tailgate after removing the item. I've had two different trifolds. The one on my 2018 F150 sagged slightly after removing the weight causing the seal to push inward when closing the tailgate. The OEM on my Maverick is very sturdy and handles anything I care to set there without any problem. I'm not sure of the brand that had the weaker crossbar, but I'm thinking Truxedo. It was a great trifold except for that one limitation, which may not be an issue for some. Just food for thought.
